Supertrapp Exhaust on the TDM

by Wesley McNutt

Hi Everyone. My name is Wes McNutt, and I live in Barstow, CA, with is about 3000 feet above sea level with no humidity. These JPGs are of my '92 TDM with a Supertrapp exhaust. I bought this system from Competition Accessories in January 1996 for $375 US. You will also note that I have a centerstand installed. There were no centerstand mounting problems to deal with in conjunction with this exhaust system, except for some minor repositioning of the canister exhaust clamps.

Anyway, back to the Supertrapps. The are all stainless steel construction, and are fully tunable for a power/sound by adding or removing diffuser discs that are inside the exhaust canisters. The system come with 8 discs per side and the instructions say that 4 per side is about the same as stock. Having had experiences with Supertrapps in the past, and knowing that running 8 discs per is VERY LOUD (on par with a straight piped H-D), I decided to run 4 discs per, and this is my current set-up.

With no jetting changes made, my TDM revs quicker, runs faster, starts a little easier, and sounds oooooh such much better. I took some sound pressure readings, following AMA procedures, and they are as follows: at idle was 97.5 dba, and at 4000 RPM was 102 dba. I feel these levels a well with in the acceptable range. I haven't put the TDM on a dyno yet, as I'm now playing with a DynoJet kit. Currently, I am running 150 main jets, #1 needle clip position, and 2.75 turns on the pilot screws (this pilot screw setting is the same as stock), but that is another story.

The only drawback that the Supertrapps pose to some is that they will not work in conjunction with hard luggage. There just isn't enough clearance as the exhaust canisters are over 4 inches in diameter and more up-swept than stock. For me, that is O.K., as I find hard luggage way too big for my tastes, and my Tour Master SB-34s work just fine.

If you have any addition questions, just e-mail the list. I'm out there, somewhere.
